Divine Encounters: Miraculous Stories of Faith and Prayer in the Catholic Church

The story of Our Lady of Guadalupe, took place in 1531 near Mexico City. The encounter involved a native Mexican peasant named Juan Diego, who experienced several apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

During one of the apparitions, Mary instructed Juan Diego to gather roses in his tilma (a type of cloak) and present them to the local bishop as proof of her appearance. Although it was winter, Juan Diego found a hilltop covered in blooming roses, which he gathered and presented to the bishop.

When Juan Diego opened his tilma to reveal the roses, the bishop and those present were astonished to see an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary imprinted on the fabric. The image, which became known as Our Lady of Guadalupe, depicted a young woman with native features, dressed in traditional Aztec garments and standing on a crescent moon.

The tilma, made of poor-quality cactus fiber, should have deteriorated within a few decades, yet it has miraculously remained intact for almost 500 years. The image has been studied extensively and cannot be fully explained by science.

Today, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City houses the original tilma and attracts millions of pilgrims each year, who come to venerate the image and seek the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
