JESUS

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today, I want to talk about the power of forgiveness. Forgiveness is not just a word or an idea; it is a transformative force that can change our lives and the lives of those around us. The importance of forgiveness is echoed throughout the Bible, and it is an essential aspect of our faith.

In the Lord's Prayer, we say, "Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us" (Matthew 6:12). Jesus teaches us that the forgiveness we receive from God is directly linked to the forgiveness we extend to others. When we hold grudges or resentments, we create a barrier between ourselves and the healing love of God.

Jesus also teaches us to forgive not just once, but "seventy times seven" (Matthew 18:22). This does not mean we count the number of times we forgive someone; it means we choose forgiveness every single time, without keeping score.

Now, I know that forgiveness can be difficult, especially when the hurt runs deep. But we must remember that forgiveness is not a sign of weakness; it is a sign of strength. Forgiveness does not mean condoning the actions of the person who hurt us; it means freeing ourselves from the burden of bitterness and anger.

Here are some practical tips to help us practice forgiveness:

1. Pray for the person who hurt you. This may be difficult at first, but it opens our hearts to God's mercy and grace.

2. Reflect on times when you have been forgiven by others or by God. Remember the relief and freedom you felt, and extend that same gift to others.

3. Try to see things from the other person's perspective. This can help us understand their actions and foster empathy and compassion.

4. Be patient with yourself. Forgiveness is a process that takes time and practice.

5. Seek support from your community. Share your struggles and lean on others for guidance and encouragement.

As we journey together in faith, let us remember that forgiveness is a cornerstone of our relationship with God and with one another. May we have the courage to let go of past hurts and embrace the healing power of forgiveness. Amen.
