A well-known miraculous encounter experienced is the story of Saint Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe. This event took place in 1531 near present-day Mexico City.

According to tradition, Juan Diego, a humble indigenous Catholic convert, encountered the Virgin Mary on December 9th, 1531, while he was on his way to attend Mass. The apparition appeared as a young, dark-skinned woman, speaking to Juan Diego in his native language, Nahuatl. She identified herself as the Virgin Mary and asked Juan Diego to request the local bishop to build a church in her honor on the site of the apparition, Tepeyac Hill.

The bishop initially doubted Juan Diego's story and asked for a sign. On December 12th, the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego again and instructed him to gather flowers from the hill, even though it was winter, and it was unlikely to find any flowers there. Juan Diego found Castilian roses, which were native to the bishop's hometown and not indigenous to Mexico. He gathered the roses in his tilma (a traditional cloak) and brought them to the bishop.

When Juan Diego unfolded his tilma to present the flowers, a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary, now known as Our Lady of Guadalupe, was imprinted on the fabric. The image's appearance and the inexplicable nature of the flowers on the hill convinced the bishop to build the requested church.

This miraculous encounter not only led to the construction of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe but also played a significant role in the conversion of millions of indigenous people to Catholicism in the region. The tilma with the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe remains intact and is displayed at the Basilica, where it continues to be an essential symbol of faith and devotion for Catholics around the world.
